Harimmama, Dad's brother left us all yesterday. The end was peaceful, with him suffering just a slight breathlessness. Ever since Dad left us five years ago, Harimmama had been feeling quite restless. Each time I visited, he managed to convey that he missed Dad badly. As he was carried away, I felt an overpowering sense of loneliness. In my mind he had filled the vacuum left by Dad's loss. He was such a positive person always finding something good in any situation. And he had a lovely smile for everyone, every time. All my friends used to call him " laughing uncle". He had retired as Joint Director, Coffee board. Many of his colleagues had come to pay their last respects. It was just a month back that they had honoured him at a special function. He had been so happy and proud about that.
Harimmama leaves a big void with his departure, not only for his children but also for us, his nieces and nephews. He belonged to a generation that strictly adhered to certain principles and expected others also to do the same. This generation believed that life was all about love and family bonding more than material prosperity. With him bidding goodbye, there is a feeling of being adrift, because he was a strong anchor to our roots. But, as they say, life has to go on
