The early arrival of the monsoon is a breathtaking event that sparks excitement across cultures. As dark clouds gather and the sky shifts to varying shades of gray, people eagerly await the first refreshing drop of rain, after the torrid summer heat. This early onset could be driven by factors like shifting ocean temperatures, atmospheric pressure variations and changing weather systems. The unexpected change of pattern is heartily welcomed by farmers, businesses and everyday people who rely on weather for their day-to-day activities.

The early monsoon leads to a dramatic transformation of the landscape. Fields that seemed lifeless burst into life, displaying their vibrant greens and florals. Animal life too welcomes the monsoon eagerly. As for humanity, the rains are a cause for celebration. Communities sing praises to the rain-gods, dance and make merry revelling in the cool showers. As kids, we used to have a lot of fun playing in the rain, splashing water on each other and getting soaked to the skin. This sheer joy sadly seems forbidden to today's children

However, early onset of monsoon also poses risks, since people are denied the time to prepare for it. Excess and early rain can lead to waterlogging, flooding, and damage to crops.

Normally, in Kerala the monsoon arrives with a bang in the first week of June, just as the schools are re-opening. But, this year, the State is experiencing the monsoon's fury since the last few days of May itself. We are already reading of areas being flooded and people moving to safer places. Memories of the 2018 floods are still vivid. Hence Governments are now vigilant and well equipped to face any calamity.

Though scientific advancements like satellite technology allows our researchers to study cloud formations and wind strengths and forecast rain patterns, nature always has the last laugh.

What we can do as the first droplets fall, and the distinctive scent of rain-soaked earth fills the air, is enjoy the beauty of the monsoon season while taking all precautions against its unpredictable nature.
